Coraline by Neil Gaiman
Coraline discovered the door a little while after they moved into the house . . .
I've re-read the book at least once a year. And let's just get it out of the way that I never saw the movie, and I don't want to see the movie . . . too much of my own world is tied into the book to give the visuals over to someone else.
A big black button. Black string licorice wrapped around a vintage British industrial spool, anchored to a big, sharp, leather needle. White cake base to represent the world she was walking through was a pale nothingness. A round maraschino cherry juice-soaked/studded center.
Fates and Furies
by Lauren Groff
A Ylang-Ylang-scented layer and an orange layer filled with Creme Patisserie. Frosted with Swiss Meringue Buttercream and topped with spun sugar. Served on a platter from the artist Helen Levi's OCEAN line.
The House of Mirth
by Edith Wharton
Two layers of pristine white cake filled and frosted (suffocated) with rose-perfumed (Rosedale) Swiss Meringue Buttercream. The sides show damage beneath the gilded facade. On top rest, sprigs of dried (dead) lilies, flowers made from wedding dress tulle, and dried roses.
Into the Water
by Paula Hawking
Three layers of Black Chocolate Cake frosted and filled with Rosemary Swiss Meringue Buttercream, covered in Mirror Glaze and patches of sugar cookie “moss.” Rests atop a giant “moss” sugar cookie.
Three layers (Height, such as that of a cliff.)
Black Chocolate Cake (Both the bottom of the drowning pool and a nod to black-hearted)
Rosemary Swiss Meringue Buttercream (In the Language of Flowers, Rosemary means Remembrance/Memory. As well, a nod to green/verdant/forest.)
Mirror Glaze colored deep blue, deep green, deep brown, and red (The glaze “drowns” the cake. It is reflective like the surface of water. The blue, green, and brown colors of water and forest, the red, of blood/death.)
Cake is patched in and rests atop a “Moss” Sugar Cookie (The environment, growth, and encroachment.)
by Charlotte Bronte
I removed, crushed up, and replaced the center..."hidden madness." Two layers of Bergamot Vanilla Cake and Gray Sky Buttercream. Topped with dried Reed grasses and a burnt sugar Thornfield Hall.
The Tell-Tale Heart
by Edgar Allan Poe
Inside the floor board cake was buried a small hand-cast chocolate heart. "It is the beating of his hideous heart!"
